The Written Examination is a multiple choice question examination covering the scope of physiotherapy as practised in Australia.

The Written Examination is designed to assess a candidate's ability to apply their knowledge of physiotherapy practice to specific patient scenarios and the candidate's potential to practice as a safe and effective physiotherapist in Australia . 

The content and format of the Written Examination highlights issues related to first practitioner contact and clinical reasoning required for present day clinical practice in Australia. The patient scenarios (case studies) in the Written Examination are drawn from all areas of physiotherapy practice in Australia. 

A successful result in the Written Examination requires:

  • sound knowledge of the basic sciences underpinning physiotherapy practice including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and physics; and
  • an ability to apply knowledge of the basic sciences to specific patient cases of the type that present to physiotherapists in current practice in Australia.

The Written Examination is conducted in Australia and overseas.

The standards applied for the written examination correspond to the expectations of entry level physiotherapists in Australia as described in the Australian Standards for Physiotherapy.
